Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine

Although acupuncture may be gaining popularity here in the West, it is quite an ancient medicine practice dating before 2,500 BCE. Simply explained, acupuncture involves small hair-thin sterile filiform needles that are inserted into various points along the body. By influencing these acupoints, acupuncturists activate the body’s self-regulating & self-healing ability. In other words, the acupuncturist is reminding the body of its ability to self-regulate, catalyzing the body to send resources where it is needed, (like the mycelium network of trees).

Acupuncture is safe and accredited as practitioners of this medicine learn through a rigorous four-year program involving safe and effective needling techniques under the observation of trained professionals. In addition to this, the risks are fairly minimal in being limited to bruising or bleeding at the sight of insertion. The needles themselves are quite small are are often not perceived by the patient. Sensations of acupuncture may involve heaviness, a dull ache, heat sensations, and tingling. Many people find acupuncture to be relaxing and recalibrating to their system as a whole.

People seek acupuncture and Chinese Medicine for all kinds of ailments including but not limited to… nervous system regulation, sports injuries, injury prevention, depression, anxiety, smoking cessation, menstrual cramps, constipation, diarrhea, erectile dysfunction, fine lines & wrinkles, hot flashes, oncology support, digestion support, cold & flu support, fatigue, fertility, issues, maintaining pregnancy, post-partum, insomnia, body pain, acne, fibromyalgia, headaches, post-operative care, and much much more.

Other Chinese Medicine healing modalities may be implemented in addition to acupuncture to support your treatment. These modalities may involve but aren’t limited to internal and external application of herbal medicines, lifestyle recommendations, bodywork, gua sha, fire cupping, and moxibustion.

Craniosacral therapy

With roots in Osteopathy as well as indigenous medicine, Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle bodywork practice that is truly multifaceted in its understanding and approach to treatment. CST can treat different presentation types including physical symptoms, neuro-physiological symptoms, nervous system issues, and mental-emotional dynamics. We are starting to understand how all these varying presentation types are interrelated and influence one another. By working with the central nervous system, cranial bones and sacrum to rebalance cranial membrane tensions: CSF and lymph flow increases; various CNS tissues are soaked in a nutrient bath which cleanses waste buildup, and our systems ease into a state of ‘rest and digest’ coaxing our parasympathetic nervous system to express itself more readily.

Herbal Medicine

Chinese medicine is time and space medicine, particularly so with herbal medicine. The herbs grown for Chinese herbal formulas are grown in a particular place, at a particular time, and are also harvested at a particular time of the year in order for the herbs to present sufficient potency and clinical effect. The money spent on herbs is truly priceless knowing the care, skill, and expertise that goes into cultivating, harvesting, preparing, and prescribing herbal formulas aimed to shift your health for the better.

It is also important to grasp the necessity of applying herbs in treatment with the understanding that although acupuncture can influence the flow of energy within the system, it cannot add energy to the system. This is where internal medicine is of great assistance with Chinese herbal medicine.

There are various forms to experience herbal medicine including bulk crude herb form, granules, capsules, as well as topicals and salves. Herbs are also beneficial in improving the success of your treatment as you can receive treatment with herbal medicine in daily life away from the treatment table. Chinese herbal formulas can often be a standalone treatment however, experiencing the full spectrum of Chinese Medicine healing modalities offers the best chance at clinical success.
